Learn About Cedar Fencing

Cedar fences are popular all throughout the US. Many people love the color of natural cedar and the look it gives off as it naturally ages – or for many people they love to stain it and preserver the beautiful cedar tone. Building a cedar fence is a relatively straightforward job, but most people don’t attempt to do it themselves as it can take quite a long time.

If you decide to build it yourself you’re going to need these types of lumber: 2×4’s, posts (at least 4″ x 4″ posts – and some people love the 6″ size) as well as fence boards – typically 4″ or 6″ wide. These 3 types of wood products comprise the majority of your material, but don’t forget your cement or your nails. Many people choose to use stainless steel nails so they won’t rust later on and bleed into the wood – which gives off an unflattering look.

Now you need your equipment. If you are building a fence under 100′ you can probably get away with a shovel or a manual post hole digger. Anything longer than that and you might want to consider renting an auger so you can really get moving and clear a bunch of dirt for your posts. Of course a wheelbarrow will be tremendously helpful as you can use it to move the dirt as well to mix the cement.

Most of you aren’t going to want to go through all that work to build your own fence, you’re going to want to hire a contractor to take care of it for you. There are a lot of great contractors out there that can help you get your fence built.
